A Georgia man won $980 million in the Mega Millions jackpot, the largest in state history, with the winning ticket sold in Newnan.
A Georgia resident has won the $980 million Mega Millions jackpot, the largest in state history, after matching the numbers 1, 8, 11, 12, 57, and the gold Mega Ball 7. The winning ticket was sold at a Publix in Newnan, about 40 miles from Atlanta, earning the store a $50,000 bonus. The jackpot ended a record 40-drawing streak without a winner. The winner can choose a $452.2 million lump-sum payment before taxes or an annuity paid over 30 years. The prize is the eighth-largest in Mega Millions history but not among the top 10 largest U.S. lottery jackpots. The Nov. 11 drawing also produced over 800,000 non-jackpot winners. Mega Millions tickets cost $5 and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with half the proceeds staying in the state of sale.
