A Bosnian-born U.S. citizen pleaded guilty to lying about her role in detainee abuse during the 1990s Balkan war to obtain citizenship.
Nada Radovan Tomanic, a 53-year-old Bosnian-born U.S. citizen, has pleaded guilty to lying about her role in the physical and psychological abuse of Bosnian Serb detainees during the 1990s Balkan conflict while seeking citizenship.
She concealed her service with the Zulfikar Special Unit of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina during her 2012 naturalization application and a sworn interview, falsely denying involvement in detention facilities or criminal acts, including serious bodily harm.
Federal prosecutors say she obtained citizenship through deception, violating the integrity of the naturalization process.
Tomanic faces up to 10 years in prison and could lose her citizenship in a separate proceeding.
The FBI, with support from DHS and USCIS, led the investigation, which involved international cooperation.
Sentencing is set for February 3, 2026.
