farmer, Gord Maichin, has criticized the exclusion of private landowners from a B.C.
Supreme Court case that affirmed the Cowichan Tribes’ Aboriginal title over about 300 hectares near the Fraser River, calling the process “backdoor dealing.” Maichin, who co-owns an eight-hectare farm in the area, said landowners were not notified of the proceedings and thus could not defend their rights.
The court ruled Crown and municipal titles in the region invalid, stating private land grants infringed on Indigenous rights.
About 45 private properties, including farms and the Country Meadows Golf Course, are within the title area, with at least 100 more in adjacent claimed zones.
Richmond City Councillor Alexa Loo plans to introduce a motion urging federal and provincial governments to support affected landowners during an appeal, citing concerns over property values and financial instability.
The court’s declarations are suspended for 18 months to allow for negotiations.
