21 arrested, 4 officers hurt in protest against immigration facility in Broadview, Illinois.
Twenty-one protesters were arrested and four officers injured Friday in Broadview, Illinois, during a clash outside a federal immigration facility.
The demonstration, which drew about 300 people, began peacefully with singing and chanting before some crossed a barrier near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement site.
Most arrested faced charges including obstruction, disorderly conduct, and walking on a highway, with one additionally charged with mob action.
Officers were injured while redirecting the crowd off a roadway; two from Broadview and one from Cook County Sheriff’s Police were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The protest targeted the facility, criticized by activists as a de facto detention center, and opposed “Operation Midway Blitz,” a federal immigration crackdown that has led to over 3,200 arrests in the Chicago area since September.
