The Trump administration has finalized a plan to open Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain to oil and gas drilling, reversing Biden-era restrictions and paving the way for at least four lease sales over the next decade.
The move, announced by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, fulfills a long-standing Republican priority and aims to boost energy development and economic growth in Alaska, with support from some local leaders and opposition from Indigenous groups and environmental organizations.
The decision also includes a land exchange to build a road through Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, aimed at improving emergency access, though it has drawn criticism over environmental and cultural impacts.
The final rule will be published in the Federal Register on November 17, 2025.
