Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell urges temporary toll cuts on Takitimu Drive due to construction delays and poor traffic flow, despite full tolls.
Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell is calling for a temporary reduction or pause in tolls on the Takitimu Drive Toll Road due to ongoing construction delays, reduced speeds, and impaired traffic flow, despite full tolls of $2.10 for cars and $5.40 for heavy vehicles.
He argues that motorists should not pay full rates for a road not operating at intended capacity, especially as Tauranga has two of New Zealand’s three toll roads.
While acknowledging long-term benefits, Uffindell says tolls should reflect current service levels.
Tauranga City Council’s Marten Rozeboom disputes the need for a reduction, stating travel times haven’t significantly worsened and that toll revenue funds essential regional road projects amid rapid growth.
The NZTA maintains it does not adjust tolls during construction, saying they fund early development and will be removed once costs are recovered.
The Takitimu North Link project remains ongoing.
