Supreme Court rules Karnataka can continue Mekedatu project, calls Tamil Nadu's challenge premature.
The Supreme Court dismissed Tamil Nadu’s challenge to Karnataka’s Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project on the Cauvery River, calling the objection premature.
The court said the project is still in early stages, with only a Detailed Project Report under review, and final approval will depend on expert bodies like the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
It emphasized that it lacks technical expertise to assess water management issues and reiterated that Karnataka must comply with prior court orders on water releases, warning of contempt proceedings if not.
The decision allows Karnataka to proceed with the project, which aims to secure drinking water for Bengaluru and ensure Tamil Nadu’s water share during droughts, while preserving the existing legal framework governing inter-state water distribution.
La Corte Suprema decide que Karnataka puede continuar con el proyecto Mekedatu, y califica de prematuro el desafío de Tamil Nadu.
