Seven new frog-like leafhopper species found in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, first in Africa since 1981.
Seven new species of frog-like leafhoppers in the genus Batracomorphus have been discovered in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, the first such findings in Africa since 1981.
Found above 1,500 meters using light traps, the insects were identified through microscopic examination of their genitalia, which use a “lock and key” mechanism to ensure species-specific mating.
Led by Dr. Alvin Helden of Anglia Ruskin University, the research, published in Zootaxa, named six species after their traits or locations and honored his late mother, Ruth, a scientist who inspired his career, by naming one Batracomorphus ruthae.
The discovery highlights the ecological role of leafhoppers as herbivores and prey, despite some species affecting crops, and underscores the importance of biodiversity research in tropical forests.
