Peter Augustine convicted of murdering 87-year-old John Mackey in a Finsbury Park robbery.
Peter Augustine, 59, has been convicted of murdering 87-year-old Irish pensioner John Mackey in a violent robbery attack in London’s Finsbury Park on May 6, 2024.
The jury found him guilty of murder and robbery after a nine-day trial, rejecting his claims that he only took Mackey’s bag after it was blown by the wind.
CCTV footage showed Augustine following Mackey, and forensic evidence confirmed severe blunt force trauma consistent with beating and stamping.
Mackey, a lifelong Arsenal fan and resident of London since the 1950s, died from head and chest injuries two days later.
Augustine, who has a history of violent crimes and was homeless, was disruptive in court and denied the charges.
He is set to be sentenced to life imprisonment on November 28.
Mackey’s family described him as a beloved, generous uncle with a sharp wit, and honored his legacy after the verdict.
