Over 1,100 workers at General Motors’ Cami plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, are threatening to occupy the facility to block GM from removing equipment after the automaker halted production of the BrightDrop electric van in October 2025 due to weak sales.
Represented by Unifor Local 88, the workers say the occupation is a last resort to prevent permanent closure and are demanding GM commit to the plant’s future.
Union leader Mike Van Boekel said the group met with Canada’s Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, who urged GM to provide a clear plan within 15 days.
While GM confirmed it has no current plans to remove equipment and remains focused on supporting workers, tensions persist as the union insists on maintaining control of the site.
