NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough promotes its free Pharmacy First service for common ailments, reducing GP visits.
NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is urging residents to use local pharmacies for common health issues during National Self Care Week, promoting its Pharmacy First service launched in January 2024.
The free service allows treatment for seven conditions—such as sore throats, earaches, and urinary tract infections—without a GP appointment, with over 131,000 consultations since launch, including nearly 60,000 in 2025.
Pharmacists offer confidential advice, prescriptions, and urgent repeat medications, plus free oral contraception and, since October 2025, free emergency contraception.
Standard prescription charges apply unless exempt.
The initiative aims to ease GP pressures and expand access to community-based care.
