Johns Hopkins University is making undergraduate education tuition-free for students from families earning up to $200,000 annually, with additional aid covering living expenses for those earning up to $100,000, resulting in zero parent contribution.
The initiative, funded by a $1.8 billion 2018 gift from alumnus Michael Bloomberg, applies to current students in spring 2026 and incoming students in fall 2026–27.
Most American families, including those above the national median income, will now attend at no cost, while households earning more than $200,000 still qualify for financial aid.
The program has also enabled expanded enrollment of low-income students and improved academic standards.
