India and Nepal launch direct rail freight link to cut costs and boost trade.
India and Nepal have expanded rail-based freight connectivity through a newly amended Treaty of Transit, enabling direct rail transport of both containerized and bulk cargo between Jogbani, India, and Biratnagar, Nepal.
The agreement, signed on November 13, 2025, strengthens key trade corridors including Kolkata–Jogbani, Kolkata–Nautanwa, and Visakhapatnam–Nautanwa, improving access to Indian ports and Nepal’s Morang District customs yard.
The rail link, funded by India and inaugurated in June 2023, aims to reduce logistics costs, ease congestion, and boost trade with third countries.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deeper economic integration, infrastructure development, and cross-border cooperation.
