The Duchess of Edinburgh touched a giant tarantula during a Peruvian Amazon biodiversity visit.
On November 12, 2025, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, encountered a Goliath birdeater spider—world’s largest tarantula—during a biodiversity walk in the Peruvian Amazon.
She inspected the arachnid, which can span nearly 30 centimeters and weigh up to 170 grams, and later held it on a leaf.
She also observed a green anaconda, photographed a sloth, and explored the jungle’s dense ecosystem.
The visit, part of a 10-day trip to Peru, Panama, Guatemala, and Belize, included meetings with Indigenous women leaders and a tour of a historic river gunboat.
The UK Foreign Office requested the trip to support environmental and sustainable development initiatives in the region.
