Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase was arrested for allegedly conspiring with bettors to manipulate pitches for profit.
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase, 27, was arrested at JFK Airport on November 14, 2025, after surrendering to federal authorities on charges of conspiring with sports bettors to manipulate his pitches for financial gain. Accused of sharing advance information about his pitches—often throwing them outside the strike zone to ensure they were called balls—Clase allegedly helped gamblers win at least $460,000 in prop bets, receiving bribes in return. He is charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests through bribery, and money laundering conspiracy. His teammate, Luis Ortiz, 26, also faces the same charges after allegedly joining the scheme in June 2025 and receiving payments for throwing intentional balls. Both pitchers, Dominican nationals, were placed on paid leave by MLB and remain under investigation. Clase was ordered to post a $600,000 bond, surrender his passport, wear a GPS monitor, and avoid gambling or contact with co-defendants. A Dec. 2 status hearing has been scheduled.
