Zanzibar's "solar mamas" gain solar tech skills to power rural homes, improving health and livelihoods.
In Zanzibar, women known as "solar mamas" are bringing solar power to rural homes without electricity, trained by Barefoot College International in a six-month program.
The initiative, now in its 10th year, has powered 1,845 homes, replacing dangerous kerosene lamps and improving health by reducing respiratory issues, fire risks, and eye strain.
The women, many with little formal education, gain technical skills, jobs, and leadership roles, while also receiving training in health, tailoring, and beekeeping.
Though facing challenges like cultural resistance and funding cuts, the program continues to expand across Africa, empowering women and promoting clean energy.
