The Supreme Court has directed Punjab and Haryana to submit reports on efforts to curb stubble burning, as Delhi’s air quality worsened, with AQI levels exceeding 450 in some areas.
The court, led by Chief Justice BR Gavai, expressed concern over ongoing construction, potential data inaccuracies from monitoring stations, and weak enforcement despite repeated warnings.
The Commission for Air Quality Management reported over 4,300 stubble burning incidents in the two states from September 15 to November 10, including 59 in Haryana’s Fatehabad district.
The court emphasized accountability and may escalate pollution controls to GRAP Stage IV, with a hearing scheduled for November 17.
