A powerful solar storm triggered by multiple coronal mass ejections caused vivid northern lights to appear across much of the central and eastern U.S., including Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, and as far south as Alabama and New Jersey, on November 11–12, 2025.
The G4 geomagnetic storm, linked to the sun’s peak 11-year activity cycle, pushed auroras to unusually low latitudes, creating rare displays of green, purple, red, and blue lights visible to the naked eye and camera.
The event followed a strong solar flare from sunspot region 4274 and was forecast to continue into Wednesday, though cloud cover and daylight may limit viewing.
