Seven opposition parties in Assam, led by the Congress, formed a coalition called the Asom Sonmilito Morcha on November 12, 2025, to challenge the BJP in the 2026 state elections.
The alliance includes the Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha, and the All Party Hill Leaders’ Conference.
They cited corruption, misrule, and oppression under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government as reasons for uniting, agreeing on a common minimum programme and planning coordinated campaigns, seat-sharing, and public outreach, including cultural events and a sapling drive.
While the Congress launched a grassroots initiative to engage voters, the AIUDF did not join.
CM Sarma dismissed the move as predictable, recalling past failures to maintain unity.
Further strategy details are expected soon.
