A plaque honoring Sir John Tenniel, illustrator of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, has been reinstalled in London after 65 years in storage.
Originally placed in 1930 at his former home in Maida Vale, it was removed before demolition in 1959 and preserved.
After a detailed conservation effort by English Heritage, including cleaning and restoring its original green glaze, the plaque was reinstalled at 52 Fitz-George Avenue in West Kensington, where Tenniel lived his final years.
This marks the first time a historic plaque has been retrieved, conserved, and reinstalled after such a prolonged absence.
The event coincides with the 160th anniversary of the first Alice book’s publication.
