Ohio passes bill for "Joshua Alerts" to quickly notify public when autistic children go missing, named after a boy who drowned after wandering off.
Ohio has passed House Bill 359, creating "Joshua Alerts" to quickly notify the public when a child with autism or a similar disability goes missing and faces immediate danger, especially if nonverbal or unable to communicate.
Named after 6-year-old Joshua Al-Lateef Jr., who drowned in November 2024 after wandering away, the system aims to fill gaps in existing alerts like AMBER, which didn’t apply due to not meeting abduction criteria.
The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate, following strong bipartisan support and advocacy from Joshua’s mother and lawmakers.
Similar efforts are underway in Pennsylvania, and five states already have alerts for missing adults with disabilities.
