The NGT ordered Uttar Pradesh to act on tannery pollution in Kanpur, citing rising heavy metal levels and stalled cleanup efforts.
The National Green Tribunal has ordered Uttar Pradesh to submit a detailed timeline within two weeks for mapping heavy metal contamination in Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, and Fatehpur districts, citing widespread pollution from tanneries and industries in Jajmau and Rania.
The tribunal emphasized assessing contamination in water, soil, air, and the food chain, identifying affected populations, and evaluating medical infrastructure.
Pollution has spread beyond initial hotspots to areas including Gangaganj Panki, Swaraj Nagar, and Kishanpur, with elevated chromium and mercury levels found in residents and environmental samples.
The NGT noted incomplete progress on 22 prior recommendations, including establishing medical centers and enforcing mercury regulations.
The case will be heard again on November 25.
