New Zealand and Niue signed a landmark agreement on Nov. 13, 2025, solidifying their partnership on key issues and creating annual leader meetings.
On November 13, 2025, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Niue Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi signed a foundational Political Declaration in Auckland, establishing the first enduring agreement between the two nations.
The pact strengthens their free association relationship, formalizing cooperation on climate change, economic development, national security, governance, and Pacific regionalism, and creating an annual leaders’ meeting.
The declaration follows Luxon’s 2024 visit to Niue to mark 50 years of self-government, during which Tagelagi met with senior New Zealand officials including Governor General Cindy Kiro and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters.
