A new co-op grocery store opened in Flint’s food desert, offering fresh food and jobs after a decade of effort.
The North Flint Food Market, a member-owned co-op, opened on November 12, 2025, in a long-ignored food desert on Flint’s north side, offering fresh groceries and prepared meals to residents who previously lacked nearby options.
Nearly 1,000 community members are owner-members, each investing $250 to help govern the store and support local agriculture.
The co-op, which took over a decade to launch, overcame funding challenges and the loss of major chains like Kroger and Meijer.
It operates daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., employs about 40 people, and plans a grand opening celebration in January 2026.
