Eneos Holdings, Japan’s largest oil refiner, says rising costs are threatening the financial viability of its 375-megawatt offshore wind project in Akita prefecture, despite no plans to delay or cancel it.
The project, awarded in March 2024 and set to begin construction next year with operations by 2029, faces challenges due to escalating expenses outpacing green electricity prices.
This follows Mitsubishi’s退出 from three offshore wind projects over cost concerns, prompting government discussions on support.
Mitsui & Co. also cited rising costs for a Niigata project but is working with officials.
Japan aims for 10 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 and 45 gigawatts by 2040.
