DHS investigates Senator Duckworth staffer for falsely posing as lawyer to free detained immigrant.
Edward York, a staffer in Senator Tammy Duckworth’s office, is under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for allegedly impersonating a lawyer to gain access to an ICE facility in East St. Louis and attempt to release Jose Ismeal Ayuzo Sandoval, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant with a history of deportation and a DUI conviction.
DHS alleges York falsely claimed legal representation, obtained a G-28 form without proper authorization, and coordinated with a law firm to submit a document lacking the detainee’s signature.
ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said York misrepresented himself to federal agents, violating procedures, and demanded answers from Duckworth’s office by November 17.
The agency cited video evidence and a Facebook post suggesting a coordinated effort to mislead officials.
The incident occurred amid rising tensions over immigration enforcement, with multiple ICE facilities targeted in recent violence.
Duckworth’s office has not commented.
