Chinese scientist Yunqing Jian, 33, pleaded guilty in a Michigan federal court to smuggling Fusarium graminearum, a crop-damaging fungus, into the U.S. without a permit, admitting she had a colleague in China send the material hidden in a book.
The University of Michigan researcher, who had already served five months in custody, avoided additional jail time and will be deported.
Her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, was detained in 2024 with similar samples at a Detroit airport and remains in China.
Prosecutors acknowledged no evidence of malicious intent, and experts stated there was no risk to U.S. agriculture.
Jian cited pressure to produce research results, saying her goal was to protect crops.
The conspiracy charge was dropped in exchange for her guilty plea.
Judge Susan DeClercq described the case as unusual and noted Jian’s academic accomplishments.
