The Capitals promoted Patrick Wellar to full-time assistant coach after Mitch Love’s exit, while the Hershey Bears hired Brent Thompson as their new assistant coach.
The Washington Capitals have named Patrick Wellar their full-time assistant coach, promoting him from interim role after Mitch Love’s departure.
Wellar, 41, previously coached defensemen and penalty killers for the Capitals’ AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, helping them win back-to-back Calder Cups in 2023 and 2024.
He returns to Hershey after seven seasons with the Bears, where he also earned a Calder Cup as a player in 2010.
Meanwhile, the Bears hired Brent Thompson, 54, as their new assistant coach after two seasons with the Anaheim Ducks and a decade as head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Both Wellar and Thompson had served in interim roles since September.
