Baroness Helen Newlove, the Victims' Commissioner for England and Wales, has died at 63 following a short illness.
A lifelong advocate for victims' rights, she became a national figure after her husband’s 2007 murder in Warrington, which inspired her to campaign for justice reform, victim support, and youth violence prevention.
Appointed in 2013 and reappointed as interim commissioner in 2023, she played a key role in shaping the Victims’ Code and the Victims and Prisoners Act.
She also served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords since 2018 and founded Newlove Warrington in 2008 to improve community safety and youth opportunities.
Tributes from officials across the political spectrum praised her courage, compassion, and enduring commitment to justice.
