Australia’s Charlestown Swim Centre is getting a $5M solar upgrade, cutting emissions and costs, with federal funding enabling a faster payback.
The Charlestown Swim Centre in Lake Macquarie, Australia, is undergoing a $5 million solar-powered upgrade, set for completion in 2028, funded by a $2.5 million federal grant and local matching funds.
The project will install solar panels on the main building and a new car park shade structure, replacing gas boilers and heat pumps to cut carbon emissions by 420 tonnes annually and save $130,000 yearly in energy costs.
The facility will remain grid-connected for backup.
The renovation includes resurfacing the gravel car park with asphalt and adding shaded parking to improve safety and comfort.
Council officials say the project’s success could lead to similar solar conversions at other regional pools, with federal funding critical to achieving a 15.2-year payback period—without it, the project would take 30 years to break even.
