Australia’s border force uses modified fishing boats to return asylum seekers and illegal fishers, raising concerns about aiding people smugglers.
The Australian Border Force has been reported to purchase and modify fishing boats for use in returning intercepted asylum seekers and illegal fishers, sparking concern over potential misuse.
The Ocean Shield, ABF’s largest vessel, recently arrived in Broome carrying four such boats, marking the program’s expansion to a new location.
Critics, including Shadow Home Affairs Minister Jonno Duniam, warn the practice may inadvertently aid people smugglers by supplying seaworthy vessels with navigation tools.
In June 2024, two converted boats were used to return 44 asylum seekers, one of which later ran aground.
Since May 2022, 36 boats have been intercepted, and 273 individuals were prosecuted for illegal fishing or smuggling in northern waters during the 2024–2025 financial year.
The ABF declined to comment on operations.
