Australian MP denies calling minister 'stupid,' sparking debate over respect and decorum in parliament.
A dispute in Australia’s parliament erupted when Nationals MP Lachlan Hunter denied calling Minister Jess Stojkovski a “stupid minister” during a debate, with acting speaker Sook Ye Lai claiming she heard the remark.
Hunter said he was telling colleague Kirrilee Warr he was leaving to pick up dinner guests, a claim backed by Warr and opposition leader Basil Zempilas.
Stojkovski, who didn’t hear the comment, accused Hunter of disrespect and gender bias, which he denied, citing his work on women’s domestic violence services.
Neither Hansard nor video footage captured the exchange.
In the upper house, Labor’s Klara Andric apologized for calling Liberal MP Nick Goiran a “fuhrer,” retracting the remark.
Speaker Stephen Price criticized disorder in both houses, stressing the need for decorum.
