Apple launches digital U.S. IDs in Wallet for TSA checks, using passport chips and facial ID, with data stored securely on devices.
Apple has launched Digital ID, allowing U.S. passport holders to add a secure digital version of their ID to Apple Wallet using their passport’s photo page and chip, followed by facial verification.
Initially available at over 250 U.S. airports for TSA checkpoint verification during domestic travel, the feature does not replace a physical passport or enable international travel.
Data is stored locally on the device, encrypted and inaccessible to Apple, with users controlling what information is shared and authenticating with Face ID or Touch ID.
The feature expands access to digital IDs for those without REAL ID-compliant licenses and is set to expand to other identity and age verification uses.
