Algeria pardoned 81-year-old writer Boualem Sansal, citing health concerns, allowing him to receive medical treatment in Germany.
Algeria has pardoned 81-year-old Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who was imprisoned since November 2024 on charges of undermining national unity after making remarks about colonial-era territorial changes.
The pardon, announced by Algeria’s presidency, followed a humanitarian appeal from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, citing Sansal’s advanced age and prostate cancer.
Sansal, a prize-winning author known for criticizing Algerian authorities and Islamist movements, had been sentenced to five years in prison without appealing, making him eligible for clemency.
His release allows him to travel to Germany for medical treatment, where he will be under care.
The case had strained relations between Algeria and France, particularly over France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty in Western Sahara.
French and German leaders welcomed the decision, calling it a gesture of humanity.
