UK’s first mandatory domestic abuse training for nursing students launched at Queen’s University Belfast in Nov 2025.
Nursing students at Queen’s University Belfast are becoming the first in the UK to receive mandatory training on identifying and responding to domestic abuse through the Unlock Safety Initiative, launched in November 2025.
The program, involving Women’s Aid, the Royal College of Nursing, and Northern Ireland’s Executive Office, will train around 600 students annually to recognize abuse signs, respond appropriately, and connect patients with support.
It includes a “Feeling Safe is Key” badge to signal trustworthiness.
The initiative responds to Northern Ireland’s high domestic abuse rates—about 20% of recorded crime in 2024—and aims to empower nurses as frontline responders, especially during vulnerable moments like pregnancy.
