Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued Harris County over its $1.3 million funding of nonprofit legal aid groups for undocumented immigrants facing deportation, calling the use of taxpayer money unconstitutional and politically motivated.
The lawsuit, filed in Harris County District Court, claims the funds violate state law by subsidizing individual defenses in civil deportation proceedings without a public purpose.
Paxton labeled the program a "cheap political stunt" and part of a broader effort to undermine federal immigration enforcement.
Harris County officials, including County Attorney Christian Menefee, dismissed the suit as politically driven and defended the program as essential, noting that represented immigrants face significantly lower deportation rates.
The case will be heard in Harris County Judicial District Court.
