A Nigerian man faces coup charges for social media posts urging military action against the government.

The Department of State Services has charged 27-year-old Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume of Rivers State with advocating a military coup through social media posts in October 2025. Filed in Abuja’s Federal High Court, the six-count charge alleges he used his verified X account to call for the overthrow of President Tinubu’s government, urge military intervention, and promote the African Economic Shield, violating Nigeria’s Criminal Code and Cybercrimes Act. The DSS says his posts were intended to incite fear and public unrest. Onukwume, arrested in Port Harcourt, is expected to be arraigned later this week.
