A new £50,000 Children’s Booker Prize launches in 2026 to boost reading for ages 8–12.
A new Children’s Booker Prize launching in 2026 will award £50,000 annually starting in 2027 to recognize outstanding fiction for children aged eight to 12.
Judged by a panel of three adults and three children, the prize aims to reverse a two-decade decline in children’s pleasure reading and elevate the status of children’s literature.
Backed by the AKO Foundation for three years, it will distribute at least 30,000 copies of winning and shortlisted books to young readers and involve children in shaping the prize’s future.
Supporters say it affirms children’s voices and fosters emotional wellbeing through reading.
