Meta’s AI chief Yann LeCun to leave for startup focused on advanced "world models," amid company shift to rapid AI deployment.
Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun is reportedly set to leave the company to launch a startup focused on developing “world models”—advanced AI systems aimed at achieving human-level understanding of the physical world.
The move, reported by the Financial Times and other outlets, comes amid a major restructuring of Meta’s AI division under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, which has shifted focus toward rapid deployment of large language models through a new Superintelligence Labs team led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.
LeCun, a Turing Award winner and pioneer in deep learning, has been critical of current large language models as a path to superintelligence and has long advocated for alternative research approaches.
His departure follows a 600-job reduction in Meta’s AI research unit and signals a strategic pivot away from long-term fundamental research.
While Meta has not confirmed the exit, sources say LeCun is in early talks to raise funding for his new venture.
