Massachusetts introduces bill to crack down on street takeovers with harsher penalties and vehicle seizures.
Massachusetts lawmakers have introduced a bill to combat organized street takeovers, which involve groups blocking roads, performing dangerous stunts, and sometimes attacking police.
The legislation, backed by Reps. Christopher Markey and Steven Xiarhos, would allow vehicle seizures, increase fines for disturbing the peace to $500, impose jail time for masked participants, and mandate up to 2.5 years in prison for reckless group driving.
The move follows recent incidents in Boston and surrounding areas, including a burning police cruiser, and aligns with Governor Maura Healey’s “zero tolerance” stance.
Enforcement efforts have already led to multiple arrests, citations, and vehicle seizures.
A public hearing has not yet been scheduled.
