A man in Ireland pleads not guilty by reason of insanity in his mother’s 2022 murder.
A 55-year-old man from Tralee, County Kerry, Billy Burns, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the 2022 murder of his mother, Miriam Burns, 75, at her Killarney home. The trial, underway at the Central Criminal Court, features a jury of 12, with proceedings expected to conclude by the end of next week, possibly extending by one or two days. Judge Ms Justice Karen O’Connor cautioned jurors against using social media or conducting independent research and advised against selecting those with strong local ties to Killarney. Prosecution is led by Sean Guerin SC and Ronan Prendergast BL, while Burns is represented by Anthony Sammon SC and Kate O’Connell. The case continues Wednesday at 11 a.m.
