About one-third of Japan’s donated mpox vaccines, the LC16 strain, are being wasted in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to strict storage and handling needs, according to Congo’s mpox response lead.
The vaccine, which must be mixed before use and administered within hours, has a high waste rate, especially when turnout is low.
Japan provided three million doses, with 1.5 million arriving in September, to fight the clade Ib mpox strain that triggered a global health emergency.
Over half a million people in Congo have been vaccinated with LC16 or another vaccine, helping reduce cases from 67,247 to 53,657 this year.
The WHO downgraded the outbreak in September due to declining cases, though transmission continues in 17 African countries.
