India mandates 24-hour removal of non-consensual intimate images via new digital safety rules.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure requiring online platforms to remove or block non-consensual intimate images within 24 hours of a complaint.
The rule, prompted by a Madras High Court directive, mandates use of digital hashing and crawlers to detect and prevent reposting, with a central "hash bank" maintained by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre.
Platforms, search engines, and domain registrars must act swiftly, while victims can report via multiple channels including One Stop Centres and the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
The initiative aims to enhance digital safety, protect privacy, and improve interagency coordination.
