India builds military base near Bangladesh border to boost security amid regional tensions.
India is building the Lachit Borphukan Military Station in Bamunigaon, Assam, just 40 km from the Bangladesh border, the first military base in the state’s western sector.
The facility, with a foundation stone laid by Lt. Gen. RC Tiwari, aims to enhance border security, intelligence gathering, and response capabilities amid concerns over cross-border crime, smuggling, and regional instability.
It will house 1,200–1,500 personnel, including a para-commando unit, and use pre-fabricated structures for rapid deployment.
The move addresses a security gap near the strategically vital “chicken’s neck” corridor and follows tensions linked to Bangladesh’s caretaker government and its expressed openness to Chinese military access.
