Google sued a Chinese-linked group for running a phishing platform that compromised millions of U.S. credit cards.
Google has sued a suspected Chinese-based criminal network called "Lighthouse" in a U.S. court, accusing it of operating a "Phishing-as-a-Service" platform that enabled scammers to create fake websites mimicking U.S. government and private sector sites, including the USPS and state DMVs.
The company claims the network used over 100 fake templates with Google’s logos, created nearly 32,000 phishing sites targeting the USPS alone from July 2023 to October 2024, and potentially compromised between 12.7 million and 115 million U.S. credit cards.
The lawsuit, which names defendants only by their online handles and seeks a declaratory judgment, aims to disrupt the scam infrastructure and deter future fraud, not pursue individual prosecutions.
Google also supports three bipartisan bills to combat scams targeting retirees, block foreign robocalls, and dismantle scam hubs.
The action comes amid ongoing antitrust scrutiny of the company.
