French minister warns U.S. Caribbean strikes may breach law, citing 76 deaths and regional risks.
At the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot voiced concern over U.S. military actions in the Caribbean, warning they could breach international law and destabilize the region.
Barrot cited 19 U.S. strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels that killed at least 76 people and noted France’s interest in the area, given its overseas territories and one million citizens there.
The U.S. has deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford and other assets under its expanded anti-drug campaign, which Venezuela has condemned as a cover for regime change.
The G7 discussions also addressed Ukraine, a proposed maritime ban on Russian LNG, Sudan’s crisis, and climate-related health threats.
