A 70-year-old Dublin woman, Mary Hall, received a suspended two-and-a-half-year prison sentence after admitting to stealing €26,562 in social welfare payments by continuing to claim Carer’s and Disability Allowance for her son after his 2022 death from leukaemia.
She said she failed to report his death to avoid confronting the loss, especially after losing another son to cancer in 2002.
The funds were used for her son’s care, rent, bills, and funeral.
Hall, who has no prior convictions, has repaid over €2,500 at €40 weekly and expressed remorse.
The court acknowledged her grief and ongoing repayments, suspending the sentence with the condition of continued payments.
