BNP Paribas has paid about Rs 39.97 lakh ($45,100) to settle with India’s SEBI over allegations it violated FPI regulations as a designated depository participant.
SEBI accused the bank of improperly granting Category II licenses to ineligible entities, failing to verify FPI regulatory status during conversions, and incorrectly reclassifying some FPIs as lower-risk Category I.
A show-cause notice was issued in February 2025, and BNP Paribas later agreed to the full settlement amount after a rejected request to reduce it.
The payment, made on October 27, 2025, closed the case, though SEBI may reopen proceedings if new evidence emerges.
