A Welsh man died in Spain after falling 20 feet from a hotel balcony when a wooden railing gave way.
Darren Silcox, a 56-year-old Cwmbran shopkeeper and father of two, died in Lanzarote, Spain, on October 25 after falling 20 feet from a hotel balcony when a wooden bannister collapsed.
He was with a 54-year-old friend at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise during a family holiday.
Silcox sustained fatal injuries, including traumatic brain trauma and skull fractures, and was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. His companion was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Spanish civil guard and local authorities are investigating the cause of the railing failure, with an inquest adjourned until July 20, 2026.
The incident has sparked concern over safety standards at tourist accommodations.
