Walter Mousseau Jr. convicted of second-degree murder in 2022 drowning at Rapid City park; insanity defense rejected.
A Pennington County jury convicted Walter Mousseau Jr., 30, of second-degree murder in the 2022 drowning of Sheldon Glenn at Rapid City’s Fourth of July Memorial Park during an Independence Day celebration.
The July 4, 2022, incident occurred in front of onlookers as Glenn was held underwater in a pond.
Mousseau, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, was arrested the same day.
The jury rejected the insanity defense, leading to a second phase of the trial where the same jury will decide whether he was legally insane at the time of the crime.
Prosecutors argue he was mentally competent.
The sentencing phase, which hinges on the jury’s determination of his mental state, is set to begin on November 14.
